Fighting fit

Filed under: Uncategorized — by MrsTosh @ 3:52 pm

My problem with fitness is that I eat and drink too much and I don’t exercise enough.  Apart from that I am fighting fit.

However, things might be about to change.

The practical driver for this is a 20 mile charity walk I am doing in June.  The emotional driver is coming later on in the year with the return of the Gladiators.  I am excited beyond words.  I have always had a notion of taking part in this and I may even consider a training regime.

Mr Tosh tells me that all I need is 6-weeks to get myself up to fighting fitness, his guidance coming in the form of Rocky Balboa

Wish me luck

Should the internet be censored?

Filed under: Uncategorized — by MrsTosh @ 8:15 pm

This is the title of a magazine article in Winter 2007 ‘Posted’. Posted is the post office’s magazine , I read today while waiting in a long queue at the post office.

I like many others believe the internet should not be censored and the responsibility for acting on information should come from the person using the data. For example, having seen messages left by friends on unattended computers, I would not pay too much heed to Facebook if I was thinking of employing them for a job. I also enjoy the growth of citizen journalism where you can read others work on the net. I don’t read the stuff I don’t like, acting as a personal censor.

So….

I was interested to read what a teacher had said about rate my teacher . The teacher said ‘I’ve had teachers on the phone to me because of what’s been said. It would be easy to say, ‘Don’t look on the site.’ But it’s difficult when we invest so much of ourselves in our job not to want to know what is being said about us.’

Out of professional curiosity (and the fact that all of my in-laws are teachers (current or retired)) I went onto the site and searched for people I knew. Sadly none of the family were featured. We did look up teachers from Mr Tosh’s school and compare the website’s notes against his memory. Quite refreshingly accurate. There was nothing about the teachers professional life, only their ability as teachers. On the basis on this limited research, my advice to a crying teacher would be -

be grateful for the feedback - the kids probably have a point. If the feedback is childish, remember it comes from a teenager and you don’t have to sink to their level.

How would I feel if there was a public website like this for consultants? Well, as our business grows from developing relationships and working with firms, this would probably go down well. My only concern is that all of the big egos involved in my line of work would add their own testimonials on how good they are (I wonder if teachers do this?)

My week in media - response

Filed under: Uncategorized — by MrsTosh @ 10:29 pm

After being tagged by Mr Tosh, I am responding to his challenge.

What I’ve read

Sadly, most of my time has been spent delving through an operations management book for my latest MBA essay.   December’s HBR has a few interesting articles, including an updated article from Porter and an article on how leaders don’t necessarily need to lead from the front.

To keep me sane, I do enjoy reading The Sun  and the News of the World story on Fergie ’roasting’ the players who enjoyed themsevles *too* much at their Christmas party with estimated fines to players topping £1million.

What I’ve watched

Mr Tosh has already criticised many of my christmas choice of tv in Holby City et al.   I also enjoyed The Hogfather  this year and movies featuring cats are always popular with me and the boss…

Ginny getting hints from Garfield

What I’ve listened to

I always enjoy dancing along to the music on  Kiss and when not listening to Kiss, I am enjoying the new Craig David album, which is a great listen.

What I’ve surfed

While writing an essay on the operational side of podcasting, it is fair to say I have looked at GU a couple of times.

I have been introduced to Anna Pickard’s website through an interest in her kittens and I also enjoy the non-kitten content.

Finally, I have spent some time looking at  family blogs and Flickr to see family photos at this time of year.
